The Roberts Family
We began our role as a support family for the Bend Volunteer Corps in 2006 and have enjoyed our family being able to be a part of such a wonderful group of generous, spiritual, vibrant young people. We have 4 daughters and have raised them here in Bend over the last 28 years. Julie grew up here and is currently the principal of our St. Francis parish school after having graduated from there and taught there for 30 years. Ken is an outside salesman for a local window and door company and has been here since 1979.
As a support family, we welcome the group to our parish community and try to be a resource to them in finding their way around Bend. During the year we try to have them join our family for meals or other activities and offer any help that we can in making them feel at home since their own families are often far away. Our involvement with the BVC community has given us a new perspective on the needs of our local community and our family an opportunity to look at simple living as something that is very hard to achieve in our society but something that we can certainly strive for.
We have gained some lifelong friends through BVC and are so fortunate to have them as a part of our family and members of our community as examples of Christ-like selfless giving. God bless the BVC!
The Roe Family Getting to know young adults who are called to serve for a time in their young adulthood is our main motivation for being a support family. The young people that we meet through BVC are inspiring, excited, and committed to great ideals. Having lived in Bend for ten years, we find this beautiful area the perfect venue to live and work in. Our children, Erin (12), Bridget (10), and David (6) are growing up doing some of the things we love to do - hiking, skiing, camping, biking, as well as being a part of a community that embraces service and Catholic values.
The Orellana Family Ana (our volunteer extraordinaire) was offered the opportunity to join the BVC Board back in 2005; an opportunity which she gladly accepted subsequently taking on the position of Secretary in the Fall of 2008 through the Summer of 2010. Our children, Juliana (now a sophomore at OSU), Phillip (now a freshman at Mt. View High School) and Dad; vividly remember and cherish the volunteer work we have been able to offer the BVC and this wonderful and giving group of young adults who continue to share their goals, spirituality and volunteerism in our beautiful city!
Bend is indeed a place of many volunteering opportunities and it's also been a wonderful place to raise our children and teach them the spirit and rewards of volunteering. The young adults who are selected to come and offer a year of their lives, truly embody this spirit and willingness to make a difference in people's lives and their own. We are blessed and fortunate to continue as a Support Family with the BVC and it is this commitment to our community that will remain close and dear to our spiritual growth!
The Harding Family
The BVC volunteers we have encountered over the last several years have been inspirational and heartwarming. Supporting these young dedicated adventurers gives us an opportunity to see the community through a new perspective. In the process, we are offered insight into places and situations that have become routine. It is a refreshing glimpse. It is a hopeful vision. Living in Bend for almost 2 decades has been a blessing. While raising three daughters we have been nurtured by the spirituality of the landscape and the community. Though not native Oregonians, our personal and professional roots run deep here in Bend. Admittedly, we are the first to chuckle when we hear a newcomer pronounce Oregon. Welcome to Oregon (OR-ih-guhn). The Hayes Family Rick and I have been longtime friends with the Meaghers and have listened to them talk about the BVC volunteers and their service for many years. I have been able to meet a few of them and learn about the amazing acts of service they do for our community year after year. Every year I am moved by their selflessness and gratefulfor the work they do in our community. Last year as I worked for a non-profitagency I became even more acutely aware of the need they are filling. When given the opportunity to support these amazing young adults we eagerly saidyes. We are learning what it means to be a support family and look forward toproviding as many home cooked meals as possible and any other support we can offer.
