Over a period of 11 years, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) placed nearly 60 volunteers in the Bend area, each of whom gave a full year of his/her life to serve the poor for local organizations. But in 2002, this innovative, faith-based organization was forced to discontinue its volunteer placements to Central Oregon due to a lack of applicants.
While the JVC has gone away, the need hasn't. In fact, it continues to grow. The Central Oregon area is currently experiencing the highest population growth in the state. And with increased population has come increased poverty.
In response to this huge void, the remaining team of local JVC support people banded together to form the Bend Volunteer Corps (BVC). Rather than sitting idle while demand is so high, they will be placing up to six full-time volunteers from throughout the United States to serve those in need in the community for one full year. |
